Improving Women's Financial Literacy - ONLINE ONLY

Speakers

Professor Alison Preston is a labour economist and a leading authority on gender equality in Australia. From over two decades of research on the economics of gender Alison has published more than 100 works with a particular focus on wage determination, pay equity, workforce sex segregation, superannuation and financial literacy. She teaches in the area of micro-economics and the economics of public policy. Prior to joining academia Alison held senior roles in the Commonwealth Public Service in Canberra and was Senior Economist with the Trades and Labor Council (now UnionsWA). She’s held visiting appointments at the University of Stirling and the University of Strathclyde in Scotland as well as with the ILO in Geneva. She has advised State and Federal Governments and has been involved in a number of commissioned projects for industry and policy organisations including, the Minerals Council of Australia, FairWork Australia, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Western Australian Health Department.

Dr Tracey West has a strong background in household finance, with several publications on household wealth, financial literacy, financial socialisation and financial planning issues, including a PhD thesis completed in 2016. Recent work has been published in Economic Notes, Financial Counselling and Planning, Financial Planning Research Journal, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, JASSA, the Consumer Interests Annual. This work contributes to knowledge on consumer behaviour, informing curriculum development and guidance for educators and policymakers. She currently teaches Behavioural Finance and Wealth Management at Griffith University, Australia.

Laura Higgins leads ASIC's Financial Capability team responsible for Australia's National Financial Capability Strategy, fostering collaboration across the government, business, community, education and research sectors to empower Australians to be in control of their financial lives. Laura also manages the Moneysmart Teaching Program, Indigenous Outreach Program and the Moneysmart website. Laura has more than 25 years' experience in management, education, government and policy development. Prior to joining ASIC Laura was a Senior Adviser in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Department of Education and Training. From 2009-12, Laura was Education Manager – Europe at the Australian Embassy in Brussels.  Laura began her career as a teacher and has a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University (Canada) and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Waterloo (Canada).

Cherelle Murphy (moderator) is a member of ANZ’s Research team. She analyses and forecasts the Australian economy and provides regular updates and insights on topics that are front of mind for ANZ’s clients. Cherelle has a special interest in fiscal policy and policy issues affecting the domestic outlook.  Cherelle has also worked in ANZ corporate communications, holding the position of Senior Manager of Media Relations for two years. She also worked as a journalist for the Australian Financial Review for five years, including as Economics Correspondent for the paper in the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery.  Cherelle began her career as an economic research analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia. She holds a Commerce degree (Hons) from Curtin University and a Master of Population Studies from Australian National University  Cherelle is formerly a director of an ACT Government Board and a not-for-profit organisation. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
