Speaking about Economics Careers in high schools and universities - ONLINE ONLY

Be part of a conversation about supporting the next generation of economics students, featuring insights from leading speakers and young economists.

Abstract

A number of high school commerce and economics teachers reach out to the RBA and the Economic Society, asking whether an economist can come and give a presentation about careers in economics. Some universities reach out about career events as well. Many of us are keen to support teachers and lecturers, particularly when there are opportunities to reach out to less advantaged areas and to less traditional cohorts. But for those of us who are not lecturers, this can be a daunting ask! The Economic Society has developed some materials to help with any presentations.

Come along and hear some inspiring stories about speaking at high schools and universities. We will hear from Dani Wood, the Chair of the Productivity Commission, a noted public speaker who has given a number of presentations about economics careers, including to girls’ schools. And we will hear from some of the young economists from the Reserve Bank’s Education Program who deliver talks in a number of schools; come and hear about their experience of learning to give these talks!

Presenters

Danielle Wood is the Chair of the Productivity Commission since 2023. Previously she was the CEO of the Grattan Institute and Head of its Budgets and Government Program. During her time at Grattan, Danielle also held roles as member of the Australian Government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce, the Parliamentary Budget Office Expert Advisory Committee, the Jobs and Skills Australia Consultative Forum and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government Research Committee. She has also worked in senior roles at the ACCC and at NERA Economic Consulting. She is currently a member of the Australian Government’s Competition Review Expert Advisory Panel. She was the co-founder and first Chair of the Women in Economics Network.

The Reserve Bank's Public Education Program was established in 2016 to support educators and students (as well as more general audiences) in learning more about the activities of the Bank and the Australian economy. The program's educational initiatives are informed by external education experts and align closely with what is being taught at the senior high school level.
