Be part of a conversation about supporting the next generation of economics students, featuring insights from leading speakers and young economists.

Abstract

A number of high school commerce and economics teachers reach out to the RBA and the Economic Society, asking whether an economist can come and give a presentation about careers in economics. Some universities reach out about career events as well. Many of us are keen to support teachers and lecturers, particularly when there are opportunities to reach out to less advantaged areas and to less traditional cohorts. But for those of us who are not lecturers, this can be a daunting ask! The Economic Society has developed some materials to help with any presentations.

Come along and hear some inspiring stories about speaking at high schools and universities. We will hear from Dani Wood, the Chair of the Productivity Commission, a noted public speaker who has given a number of presentations about economics careers, including to girls’ schools. And we will hear from some of the young economists from the Reserve Bank’s Education Program who deliver talks in a number of schools; come and hear about their experience of learning to give these talks!

Presenters

Danielle Wood Danielle Wood is Chair of the Productivity Commission. She leads the Commission in providing evidence-backed research and policy advice to the Australian Government. She is currently co-leading its Housing Supply Regulation Inquiry. Danielle is a member of the Australian Government’s Competition Review Expert Advisory Panel and is Co-Lead of the Evaluation Profession across the public service. She also holds advisory roles for the Melbourne Institute, UNSW Public Policy Institute and Australian Dialogues.  Prior to joining the Commission, Danielle was CEO of the Grattan Institute. Before that, she worked in senior roles at the ACCC and in economic consulting. She started her career as a graduate at the Productivity Commission.  Danielle is an Honorary Fellow and former President of the Economic Society of Australia and was the co-founder and first Chair of the Women in Economics Network. She holds an Honours Degree in Economics from the University of Adelaide and Masters Degrees in Economics and Law from the University of Melbourne. In 2025, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Adelaide. Danielle was the winner of the 2024 AFR Women in Leadership Awards. 

The Reserve Bank's Public Education Program was established in 2016 to support educators and students (as well as more general audiences) in learning more about the activities of the Bank and the Australian economy. The program's educational initiatives are informed by external education experts and align closely with what is being taught at the senior high school level.
