Women in Economics joins the Melbourne Institute Outlook Conference

The Women in Economics Network is proud to be taking part in the Melbourne Institute Outlook Conference, to be held on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 October 2018. The Outlook Conference is the leading national forum on economic and social policy in Australia, bringing together thought-leaders and policy influencers for rigorous discussion of the issues facing Australia today.
As part of the conference program, WEN will be hosting a discussion table at the Roundtable Breakfast on Friday 12 October on the topic of The economics of care: How do we recognise its true value and why does this matter for gender equality?
Among the rest of the Outlook Conference program, you will find strong female representation with speakers including Lucy Brogden, Karen Chester, Melinda Cilento, Dr Luci Ellis, Kathryn Fagg, Hon. Dr Vince FitzGerald, AO: The rise of economists in public policy … and looming challenges
Drawing on his extensive public policy experience, Vince FitzGerald's address will focus on the increased role of economics and economists in public policy formulation, on how economic reform was successfully achieved in the past and how the prospects for achieving reform can be improved in today’s environment. Finally he will analyse the growing challenges of inequality and fiscal sustainability after the global financial crisis.
The annual Ted Evans Public Policy Lecture is a partnership between ESA Qld, UQ, QUT and Griffith University.

Regulators face significant trade-offs in conducting their roles. Governments have been challenging their regulatory agencies to decrease the burden they impose on compliant stakeholders. However, poorly designed approaches may inadvertently encourage behaviours that go against the policy objectives underpinning regulatory schemes.
Join us for September's Policy in the Pub to hear from Anthony Rossiter from the Centre for Market Design to discuss the case for using economic design principles and processes to improve the design and implementation of regulation, drawing on a case study in biosecurity regulation.

Abstract: Recent research focuses on factors determining gender differences in academic achievements and in university field of study. In this study we focus on how teachers’ gender role attitudes and stereotypes influence the gender gap by affecting the environment at school. We explore the extent to which teachers’ gender bias in high school influences students’ academic performance in high-stake exams that determine admission to universities and on students’ choice of university field of study. We introduce a new way of measuring teacher gender bias and we link teachers over time to get a persistent measure of their bias based on many classes.
