How Economics Improved the World in 2016
Join us for the Economic Society’s final event for the year. The function will feature an update from Professor Flavio Menezes on the activities for the Society for the year. This will be followed by a light-hearted look at how economics improved the world in 2016 with commentary from Professor Flavio Menezes and Professor Lionel Page of QUT, and end-of-year drinks and savouries.
Professor Flavio Menezes, President of the Economic Society of Australian (Qld) is a Professor of Economics at UQ, Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, Senior Fellow at the Australian Institute of Business and Economics, member of the standing committee of the Econometric Society (Australasia) and Deputy Chair of the Qld Competition Authority.
Lionel Page
Professor Lionel Page is head of the Behavioural Economics Group at QUT and received the Young Economist Award from the Economic Society which recognises the Australian economist under the age of forty who is deemed to have made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.

Workshop on Computable General Equilibrium Modelling
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models play an important role in many aspects of policy analysis from environmental regulation to tax policy at both national and state level. This workshop is aimed at academic and professional economists interested in learning the foundations of CGE modeling for policy purposes. The workshop consists of a theoretical session and a practical session to be conducted in the computer lab.

Uncertainty is a drag on the real economy. But where does uncertainty originate? How does it influence the economic system? What can macro policies do about it? The talk will document the main facts about uncertainty at a macroeconomic level, document the real effects of uncertainty shocks, offer an overview of the main channels via which uncertainty shocks are transmitted to the economy, and cover the role that macroeconomic policies can play in tackling the effects of such shocks. Estimates of the real cost associated to the "Brexit" shock will be proposed.
