Economists have long been interested in public policy and other real-world impact, but in recent years the advent of more accessible data, the proliferation of applied microeconomic methods for causal influence, and the growth of behavioral economics and “Nudge” units have combined to expand opportunities for “evidence-based” policy-making.  While this movement is large and diverse, one frequent mechanism for such policy-making is a partnership between academic researchers and industry, government and/or non-profit leaders.

2023 Colin Clark Memorial Lecture by Professor Diane Coyle, Cambridge University - ONLINE ONLY

Event Type: ESA Event

Date: Thursday Oct 26, 2023, 5:00 pm

From: Queensland

Despite the rapid pace of innovation, many countries are seeing sluggish growth in productivity and, consequently, in living standards. At the same time, the critiques of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of progress have grown louder in the face of mounting environmental crises and ageing populations.

So, are our conventional measures of productivity inadequate? Have we reached a point where innovation alone can no longer drive sustainable growth? Is it time to rethink GDP and switch to alternative metrics to measure progress?

Join UQ economics and business alumni, staff and students for an insightful online lecture that explores these pressing questions, presented by progress and productivity expert Professor Diane Coyle from the University of Cambridge.
