Reframing the Tax Reform Debate - Who Lifts and Who Leans, Really?

Event Type: ESA Event

Date: Wednesday Jun 11, 2025, 5:15 pm

From: Tasmania

Join us for a thought-provoking event, Reframing the Tax Reform Debate – Who Lifts and Who Leans, Really?, presented by Joe Roach. Joe has returned to Tasmania after a thirty year career in the Australian public service - including in senior roles in Defence and Finance.  He has seen government decision-making up close under both Coalition and Labor governments - being in the Cabinet room is a unique experience - but one he cannot share - unfortunately.
Since leaving the public service in 2014, Joe has been involved in a private sector startup, but has remained an active voice in public policy discourse, contributing to the work of the Productivity Commission and the Grattan Institute on inter-generational equity issues.  While he shares many of the general concerns raised by Ken Henry and Saul Eslake, the numbers matter.  Joe will challenge conventional narratives around tax reform and make a case for a different way forward.
Joe is also offering the chance to win a $200 gift voucher for anyone who attends and takes up his challenge on the night - you will have to attend on the night to have a chance to collect!

How much is dotty art worth - physical or digital?

Event Type: ESA Event

Date: Wednesday Apr 16, 2025, 5:45 pm

From: Australian Capital Territory

Proving that economics can be both fascinating and fun, Dr. John Hawkins and Jack Wasson from the University of Canberra will unpack the economics behind Damien Hirst's Currency

British artist, Damien Hirst, recently sold some of his dotty paintings. The twist was that buyers had to choose whether to have them on paper or as an electronic Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) - they could not have both. The NFT had a life of one year - after which they could be exchanged for coloured dots on an A4 sheet of paper. If the NFT was not exchanged, the corresponding paper would be burned and disappear forever.

Guest Speakers: Dr John Hawkins and Jack Wasson

UC Economics students FOC : limits and conditions apply.

The Promo Code will be provided internally from the Faculty of Business, Government and Law.
