View ...Future ready? Australia and international trade in the post-pandemic global economy
Event Type: ESA Event
Date: Friday May 6, 2022, 12:00 pm
Australia’s trade flows have experienced a high degree of volatility during the global pandemic, due to non-pharmaceutical interventions, supply chain issues and the recent war in Ukraine. As our economy continues to recover, new and emerging trade opportunities are likely to be a key driver of improvements in productivity and living standards. At the same time, these initiatives could face a number of headwinds, as the pace of economic integration has slowed. The multilateral rules-based order has come under pressure and there is a lower appetite for reduced trade barriers among some partners, while others are actively retreating from openness. Navigating such challenges will require a sound evidence base and careful and thorough economic analysis.

Engaged Egalitarianism: Why the Australian Recovery Must Prioritise Openness
The pandemic years have seen a collapse in migration, tourism and offshore investment. As the nation recovers, these traditional sources of economic growth will be vital to national prosperity. Yet it is vital to ensure that the gains from openness are broadly shared across the community. This approach, which I describe as ‘engaged egalitarianism’ will be vital to ensuring openness delivers fairness, as well as to avoiding the political backlash against open markets that might otherwise ensue. Join us for this in-person event (venue to be confirmed).

Policy in the Pub: Public Transport Pricing - ONLINE ONLY
Event Type: ESA Event
Date: Wednesday Mar 23, 2022, 5:30 pm
In cities around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on public transport. Buses, trains and light rail cars — once teaming with commuters — ran empty for much of 2020 and 2021. They have continued to run below capacity post-lockdown, thanks to renewed preferences for car travel and the rise of work-from-home practices. In the longer term, as urban populations grow, public transport will no doubt return to higher patronage — and to familiar capacity constraints.
