There has been a resurgence of interest in income inequality in recent years, in part fueled by research by Atkinson, Piketty, Saez and others drawing on tax records to study the long-run evolution of top incomes. Please join us for October's Professional Development seminar to hear from Professor Roger Wilkins on how this research has impacted on our understanding of income inequality, its limitations, and how we reconcile it with the more traditional household survey-based analyses of income inequality. Discussion will particularly emphasise the Australian case.

Dr Vince FitzGerald, AO: The rise of economists in public policy … and looming challenges
Drawing on his extensive public policy experience, Vince FitzGerald's address will focus on the increased role of economics and economists in public policy formulation, on how economic reform was successfully achieved in the past and how the prospects for achieving reform can be improved in today’s environment. Finally he will analyse the growing challenges of inequality and fiscal sustainability after the global financial crisis.
