Many of the issues affecting Australia’s long-term welfare require a strong international framework. The current framework for trade and taxation is being challenged in an increasingly digitalised world facing renewed trade tensions.
In an event jointly organised by the Economic Society Qld and the School of Economics and Finance at QUT, Australia’s Ambassador to the OECD, Dr Alex Robson, will discuss the Government’s efforts to advance Australia’s interests at the OECD in response to these challenges, with a special focus on multinational taxation and the digital economy.

2019 Ted Evans Public Policy Lecture, by Karen Chester, Deputy Chair, ASIC - Public policy - the first line of defence
Drawing on her extensive experience during a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors, Karen Chester will discuss the key role that public policy should play as the first line of defence for establishing competitive and fair markets. The subsequent lines of defence being consumers, the conduct of firms and finally the regulator. Karen will also explore why a few critical markets today (including the financial system) are falling short in delivering competitive and fair outcomes and how these failings might be addressed.
The annual Ted Evans Public Policy Lecture is a partnership between ESA Qld, UQ, QUT and Griffith University.
