Women in Economics Network: Rediscovering the link between public policy and the economics of innovation

Politicians always say they’re on the side of wealth creators. But who are Australia's real wealth creators, and does government do a good enough job of incentivising them? In a provocative new book, Marianna Mazzucato - last year's Leontief Prize winner and the inaugural Director of the Institute for Innovation Public Purpose at UCL - argues that today's economists and policy makers need a clearer understanding of the distinction between activities that genuinely add to the productive capacity of our economy and those that merely siphon off economic rents.
Mazzucato’s work touches on important questions for policy makers: how much do the innovations of big technology and drug companies rely on government-funded discoveries? What risks does outsourcing government services to the lowest bidder create and who bears them?
Joining us to celebrate the launch of this new title will be Innovation and Science Australia board member and Director and Dandolo partners, Dr Bronte Adams, and Marion Terrill of the Grattan Institute, and Professor Anne-Laure Mention - Director of RMIT Global Business Innovation Enabling Capability Platform and Founding Editor of the Journal of Innovation Management.
This conversation will be moderated by Jess Young, Director at Deloitte Access Economics

The CEMENT mentoring program is a randomized controlled trial that provides professional development advice for junior female economists at research-intensive institutions. The program was previously sponsored by the US National Science Foundation and is now sponsored by the American Economics Association.
