Kickstart your career with the NSW Treasury
NSW Treasury is looking for new and recent graduates wanting to commence a career in public policy economics.
Building on your background, and helping to ensure you make a successful start, you will develop and improve your skills in core areas, including:
- awareness of public sector policy development practices, policies and governing legislation which guide work in the NSW Government, including legislative and budgetary processes.
- time management with complexity, and uncertainty
- building and maintaining solid working relationships with mentors, managers and colleagues
You will join our Economic Strategy and Productivity group, which includes the NSW Productivity Commission. You will be working within either the Markets & Regulation Division or the Centre for Economic Evidence. Read more about your future Group and Division.
The Associate Economist role is structured within a twelve month development program, The program comprises placements to teams within the ESP Group, dedicated training sessions with your cohort, and other professional development opportunities. You will be exposed to a broad range of work content and issues. Working with multiple internal and external stakeholders will develop your network and help you to understand your career options in public policy. The specialised knowledge, skills and experience you gain will give you a competitive edge to progress into other roles at the end of the program.
Within your placements you will contribute to the development of economic advice and analysis, informing policy development, implementation, and government decision making. This includes research and analysis, contributing to the assessment of economic impacts, and the evaluation of policy proposals, across a range of state government public policy contexts.

Achieve success as an Associate Economist
The Associate Economist role requires:
- relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in economics, public policy, or a related field.
- self management including in developing and applying new skills and completing work assignments
- the flexibility and adaptability to respond quickly when situations change
- undertaking research and analysing information to make recommendations based on relevant evidence
- writing that is well structured and easy to follow
- basic knowledge of public economics (desirable).

Eligibility
To apply for our Career Launch Program, you will need to have:
- completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, public policy, or a related field) by January 2024
- Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency of Australia.
NSW Treasury does not provide relocation expenses, nor can we support employer-sponsored work visas unless specifically referenced in the advertisement.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo background checks and provide confirmation of tertiary academic qualifications before commencement.
