Vale, Philip Macgregor Norman 16/11/1949-18/7/2024

Philip, an Honorary Fellow of the Economic Society of Australia died recently after a short illness.

As a long-time member of the Victoria branch, he was President and also Treasurer. After his father Arthur Norman died, his mother Jean Macgregor married Richard Downing, the Ritchie Professor of Economic Research, at the University of Melbourne and editor of the Economic Record. As a dutiful stepson, Philip followed in his stepfather’s footsteps and read economics at Melbourne. He then undertook a doctorate at the LSE in econometrics.  Returning to Australia, Philip worked at the Reserve Bank and extended his talents to the corporate world working with BHP and also the Business Council of Australia.

He was also involved with the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. His latter career was as a transport economist and was employed by the Victorian Government in a number of executive positions.

In his non-retirement, he worked as an economic consultant.

His funeral service was in Melbourne on Friday, 18/8/2024 at East Kew Uniting Church, 142 Normanby Rd. East Kew at 10.30. It will be live streamed by White Lady funerals.
