VALE John Dennis Stuart Macleod, 1931-1925

A former national president of the Society and former president of the Victorian branch died on August 25. John was national President of the Society during the years 1987-1990 and was instrumental in introducing the Distinguished Fellow Award which was instigated in 1987. John was national president when the mammoth Australian Economic Congress took place at the ANU in the bicentennial year of 1988. Over a thousand economists attended that week-long event with a galaxy of internationally eminent economists in attendance.

A graduate of UWA, John joined the ANZ Bank and rose to become the chief economist in posts such as Wellington, London and Sydney before taking up an executive position. He later became the Chief Economist for the mining house CRA in Melbourne. While a member of the Victorian branch, John introduced a highly successful forecasting conference which attracted much media attention as well as being addressed by key officials as well as several federal treasurers.
